Don't try to twist history or glorify any empire, you can appreciate culture and military achievements without idolising the empire or its actions. The Spanish empire wasn't good, modern day Spain is fine. In short, sort of true, sort of doesn't matter coming from who it comes, but that doesn't make it better. Obviously, modern day Spain shouldn't be held accountable for that stuff, it's just a matter of acknowledging what happened and not trying to twist history, empire apologia is wrong in many ways and their arguments are also usually lies.Īnd for those who believe that being subject of an empire was a cool thing to be proud of, (I once saw a mexican on Reddit saying he was proud we were part of the Spanish empire) remember that we were the subjects, not part of but a subject of, and that unless you're 100% Spanish, you most likely would have been a second class citizen, without mentioning that if you were mix between indigenous/African and Spanish, your mother was most likely raped or later on, part of an arranged marriage. Truth is the Spanish empire was awful, arguably as bad as the worse empires, and cruel on its own way, and it should be acknowledged, without forgetting Portugal, Britain, france, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands being horrible as well.
This doesn't mean the white legend is true (Franco's Spain promoted the idea that Spain was the best empire and did the best for the natives, which is a lie).
It was propaganda by political enemies still, but again. There's a lot of truths on it, people often forget that not all propaganda is based on lies, there's evidence on most atrocities committed by the Spanish empire. Also justifying everything they did and that all the South American countries would be better off with Spain or that Simon bolivar was the biggest traitor in Spanish history. It seems there’s an unhealthy obsession with bragging about the Spanish empire in 2021 when it ended 200 years ago. What do Latinos think about this? There seems to be a huge amount if Spaniards who still think that we’ve been conditioned to think that Spain is the worst and that we’re all brainwashed by our American education. Being that the majority or my videos are in Spain, I’ve grown a Spanish audience and I constantly get bombarded with comments on my videos talking about “la leyenda negra.” I then get video suggestions from Latino content creators like this where latino immigrants talk about it. part of my YouTube channel is that I have the goal or exploring every Spanish speaking country/territory.
